Teaching in South Florida in the Fall can have its hiccups – a big one being the threat of tropical weather. Some years see little tropical activity, but as we experienced this month with Hurricane Dorian, the semester’s progress can come to a complete halt due to these storms. For this reason, Instructional Technologies has put together a couple of essential resources for you to both prepare your course for emergency situations and recover any lost instructional time.
The FAU Emergency Module
This module includes resources and activities for you to selectively publish and use in your Canvas course(s). Upon importing, you’ll see an instructions page for you, as well as the 4 parts of the module:
- An Emergency Resources Page with links and contact methods for different lines of communication and emergency response in all areas surrounding FAU campuses
- A Pre-Emergency Survey intended to allow you to gather student contact info in one downloadable file
- A Post-Emergency Survey prompting the students to share how a storm or other school-wide emergency has impacted their ability to complete the coursework
- A Post-Emergency Discussion post where students can share their perspective and impact of the emergency with each other

Lost Instructional Time
In the event of an emergency, it’s possible that your class gets delayed by a number of sessions. Our instructional systems offer ways to make up this time through flexible and accessible technologies. You might want to schedule a videoconference with your class or record a video lecture to give students the opportunity to attend classes they missed without losing the face-to-face experience of a live session. Below are a few tips for making up this time. For help with any of the tools below, Visit TechEvents.fau.edu to register for an event and learn more or book a personal appointment by visiting our Appointment Scheduler,
- Schedule a videoconference with the Cisco Webex integration in Canvas
- You can schedule a specific time for your students to join you virtually, in a space where you can share documents, virtual whiteboards, images and other media
- Webex also allows you to record your session so that students can view the conference at a later date
- To get started, follow these written instructions.
- For video guides, follow the tutorials below:
- Record a video lecture with My Mediasite and the Mediasite Desktop Recorder
