Digital teaching and learning are more prevalent than ever before. While most would agree that the paradigm has shifted favorably for both students and instructors, it does present some new and unique challenges.
Plagiarism — in particular, is on the rise. A recent study found that plagiarism among students jumped by 10 percentage points after the pandemic, when classes went online — an increase in the average rate of copying in student work from 35 percent to 45 percent. Instructors find themselves under greater pressure to of deter these kinds of academic infidelity in the digital realm.
What measures can YOU take to avoid plagiarism and ensure integrity in the online classroom?
- Use a plagiarism prevention tool such as Turnitin to check similarity reports in your students’ submissions
- Keep an open dialogue with your students, and suggest that they use a pre-submission writing tool like Draft Coach to help reduce similarity BEFORE submitting assignments
- Help your students leverage FAU resources like the University Center for Excellence in Writing (UCEW)
