For example, a question may merit partial credit even though the student’s answer was marked as incorrect. We see this in math problems that require multiple calculations or steps or in multiple-answer questions where answers carry different weights. In either case, we may want to reward the student with partial credit for an answer that was marked as incorrect on a Canvas test/quiz, while not having to edit and re-grade an entire set of submissions.

There are two methods we can use to achieve this. First, let’s look at the points field in a specific question box. Go into a Canvas course and open up the SpeedGrader for one of your quizzes. In any question, you’ll notice a box to the top-right of the question box displaying the points awarded for the student’s answer. If you would like to change this value, simply click in the box and type the number of points (negative/positive numbers with or without decimals accepted) you would like to award.

The second method would be to use the Fudge Points feature after you have looked at the entire submission. While in the SpeedGrader, to add points to the final score of a student’s submission, simply scroll to the bottom of the quiz and look for a field located above the final score labeled “Fudge Points.” Adjusting this field will adjust the total score for this student’s submission. When you are finished, click the “Update Scores” button to finalize your changes and update the grade.

Fudge Points field in Canvas SpeedGrader.

For more information on this topic, please visit the following Canvas documents:

Grade questions in SpeedGrader

Use Fudge Points in SpeedGrader

When writing a test or quiz in Canvas, we sometimes end up with quiz results that need to be adjusted.
