Instructors can feel free to experience the functionality of this tool even though it is still in beta stages. Always remember that you can fill out a ticket for any of your Canvas needs at helpdesk.fau.edu.<\/p>\n<p>The New Gradebook is a beta feature that allows instructors to view an improved version of the Gradebook. This feature makes grading more flexible and intuitive and elevates the Gradebook user experience.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"jive_content_id_Feature_Setup\">Feature Setup<\/h1>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Feature_Option\">Feature Option<\/h2>\n<p>At the account level, admins can allow the New Gradebook feature option on a course-by-course basis. The Feature Options tab is located in Account Settings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the course level, instructors can use the New Gradebook if enabled by their Canvas admin in Course Settings. The New Gradebook replaces functionality of the current Gradebook. However, New Gradebook can be disabled by the admin at any time without affecting Gradebook data.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Permissions\">Permissions<\/h2>\n<p>No additional permissions are required for this feature. The New Gradebook can be used by any user added to a course with an instructor or TA role, or a custom role based on the instructor role.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"jive_content_id_Main_Features\">Main Features<\/h1>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Global_Gradebook_Options\">Global Gradebook Options<\/h2>\n<p>The New Gradebook mimics the view of the current Gradebook while including several additional features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Gradebook menu<\/strong>\u00a0displays the various Gradebooks that may be available in a course: Learning Mastery (if enabled), Individual View, and Gradebook History. These Gradebook types have been consolidated in one location.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>View menu<\/strong>\u00a0includes multiple options to sort and filter assignments.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Actions menu<\/strong>\u00a0displays options to Sync to SIS (if enabled), import a Gradebook CSV, or export the Gradebook CSV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259000\/new-gradebook.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-1 jive-image j-img-original\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259000\/1600-813\/new-gradebook.png\" alt=\"New Gradebook with Gradebook, View, and Action menus\" width=\"1600\" height=\"813\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The New Gradebook offers crosshairs and highlighting for improved orientation. Additionally, each row includes alternating colors to help with navigation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Search field supports searching for\u00a0users by user name.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All options available in the Settings menu in the current Gradebook have been repurposed in the New Gradebook View menu. Future releases will include additional features in the Settings menu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Accessibility\">Accessibility<\/h3>\n<p>The New Gradebook includes the following keyboard shortcuts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>s : Sort the grid on the current active column; applied sorting is by grade (low to high)<\/li>\n<li>m : Open menu for the active column<\/li>\n<li>esc : Close the currently active menu<\/li>\n<li>g : Go to the current assignment&#8217;s detail page<\/li>\n<li>c : Open the grade detail\u00a0tray<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When navigating the Gradebook grid, press the escape key before using keyboard shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_View_Menu_Options\">View Menu Options<\/h2>\n<p>The New Gradebook includes a View menu with multiple options to sort and filter assignments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259023\/rn-new-gradebook-view-menu-crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-9 jive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259023\/rn-new-gradebook-view-menu-crop.png\" alt=\"New Gradebook View Menu options\" width=\"694\" height=\"580\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Arrange_By\">Arrange By<\/h3>\n<p>The Arrange By menu allows the Gradebook columns to be arranged by default order (as displayed in the Assignments page), assignment name (A\u2013Z, Z\u2013A), due date (oldest to newest, newest to oldest), points (lowest to highest, highest to lowest), or module (first to last, last to first).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Filter\">Filter<\/h3>\n<p>The Filter menu allows the Gradebook to be filtered by assignment group, section, modules, and grading period (displays only when the course is associated with a grading period term at the account level).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When filter options are selected, filter menus display at the top of the Gradebook. Multiple filters can be used at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Currently when\u00a0selecting a filter, the filter retains the last viewed selection. For instance, if the sections filter is set to a specific section and then completely removed as a filter option, the Gradebook continues to display all results from the last selected section.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Column structure in the New Gradebook are only persistent within the New Gradebook. Users who switch back to the current Gradebook will view the persistent column structure from the last time the current Gradebook was accessed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Status\">Status<\/h3>\n<p>The Status option allows the default colors in the Gradebook to be customized for the instructor viewing the Gradebook. Each color is a default associated with a Gradebook status: late, missing, resubmitted, dropped, or excused. Colors can be adjusted by selecting a default color or using a supported HEX code.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Colors are a per-user setting, so the colors set by one instructor do not apply if another instructor views the Gradebook. Additionally, status names cannot be changed. This behavior helps ensure consistency with labels throughout the course regardless of the user viewing the Gradebook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Some colors may seem darker if they are in a row that has an alternating gray background.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259022\/rn-new-gradebook-view-statuses-option-crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-8 jive-image j-img-original\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259022\/1250-900\/rn-new-gradebook-view-statuses-option-crop.png\" alt=\"New Gradebook Status options and colors\" width=\"1250\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_View_Columns\">View Columns<\/h3>\n<p>The remaining menu options allows the Gradebook to display the notes column as well as any unpublished assignments. Unpublished assignments can only be differentiated from published assignments by enabling or disabling this view option and do not include an unpublished label.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Gradebook_Column_Options\">Gradebook Column Options<\/h2>\n<p>The Student Name column and individual Assignment column include improved sorting and display options.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Student_Name\">Student Name<\/h3>\n<p>The Student Name column options include the existing name default sorting and display options (A\u2013Z and first\/last name), in addition to showing concluded and inactive enrollments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Secondary Info menu allows secondary information to display below the student\u2019s name. Options include the student\u2019s section, SIS, ID, Login ID, or no display. Only one secondary information option can be displayed at one time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259021\/rn-new-gradebook-student-name-column-menu-default-crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-7 jive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259021\/rn-new-gradebook-student-name-column-menu-default-crop.png\" alt=\"New Gradebook Student Name Column Options\" width=\"668\" height=\"654\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Assignments\">Assignments<\/h3>\n<p>Each individual assignment column options include sorting by grade (low to high, high to low), missing status, and late status. Other features include Message Students Who, Curve Grades, Set Default Grade, Mute Assignment, and Download Submissions (if applicable). Clicking the name of the assignment will open the assignment details page.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each assignment defaults to the grade display set in the assignment. However, the Enter Grades as menu allows the assignment grade to be viewed by points or percentage. For Letter Grade or GPA assignments, the grade can also be displayed by grading scheme. Changing the Enter Grades display option is for grading convenience only and does not affect the actual grade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, SpeedGrader can only be accessed through an individual student\u2019s grade detail tray.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: For complete\/incomplete assignments, the Curving Grades and Enter Grades options are not available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259020\/rn-new-gradebook-assignment-column-menu-default-crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-6 jive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259020\/rn-new-gradebook-assignment-column-menu-default-crop.png\" alt=\"New Gradebook Assignment Menu options\" width=\"898\" height=\"722\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Grades_Management\">Grades Management<\/h2>\n<p>Grades and comments can be easily added to any assignment for any student using the grade detail\u00a0tray, which can be accessed by clicking any cell in the Gradebook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259019\/rn-new-gradebook-individual-assignment-speedgrader-icon-with-tray.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-5 jive-image j-img-original\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259019\/1600-817\/rn-new-gradebook-individual-assignment-speedgrader-icon-with-tray.png\" alt=\"Clicking the cell of the Gradebook opens the grade detail tray\" width=\"1600\" height=\"817\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Grade_DetailTray\">Grade Detail\u00a0Tray<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0grade detail tray displays a grading summary by assignment and student. Like in SpeedGrader, an instructor can click the next and previous links at the top of the\u00a0tray to advance to another student. However, the Gradebook also allows advancing directly to another assignment as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Currently SpeedGrader can only be accessed for an assignment from the Gradebook through the grade detail tray.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Grade_and_Status\">Grade and Status<\/h3>\n<p>The grade and status for the assignment grade can be managed individually by the instructor and manually changed to late, missing, excused, or none.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The late status includes the option to set the number of days that have passed since the assignment was due. This option currently will eventually apply to the Late Policies feature, which is currently in development and will be available in a future release. Late Policies will allow an instructor to create a grade deduction automatically applied based on the number of days the assignment is late.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259017\/rn-new-gradebook-tray-status-late.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-3 jive-image j-img-original\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259017\/1172-900\/rn-new-gradebook-tray-status-late.png\" alt=\"Grade detail tray allows instructors to manually change grades and status: late, missing, excused\" width=\"1172\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jive_content_id_Comments\">Comments<\/h3>\n<p>Located at the bottom of the grade detail tray, the\u00a0Comments field supports comment editing. Edited comments display the date and time the comment was edited. Comments can only be edited by the same user who created the comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259018\/rn-new-gradebook-tray-comment-edit-and-delete.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-4 jive-image\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259018\/300-289\/rn-new-gradebook-tray-comment-edit-and-delete.png\" alt=\"Comments support editing if necessary\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Student_Grades\">Student Grades<\/h2>\n<p>When New Gradebook is enabled, the student Grades page includes the status column.\u00a0The status displayed in the Gradebook displays in the\u00a0Grades page, which can include late and missing labels. Excused assignments also display in the Score column. However, any online assignment that is automatically marked by Canvas as late or missing can be manually changed by the instructor in the Gradebook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/showImage\/102-13333-4-259016\/rn-new-gradebook-student-grades-status-column.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-2 jive-image j-img-original\" src=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/servlet\/JiveServlet\/downloadImage\/102-13333-4-259016\/1600-741\/rn-new-gradebook-student-grades-status-column.png\" alt=\"When New Gradebook is enabled, the student grades page displays the status column with missing and late labels\" width=\"1600\" height=\"741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"jive_content_id_Community_Resources\">Community Resources<\/h1>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Future_Enhancements\">Future Enhancements<\/h2>\n<p>This document outlines existing functionality included in the initial release of this feature. The New Gradebook will continue to receive additional feature enhancements over future releases as indicated in\u00a0<a class=\"jivecontainerTT-hover-container jive-link-community-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/community\/answers\/releases\/content?filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~tag%5Bgradebook_new%5D\">Release Notes<\/a>. Please follow the release notes for future functionality updates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jive_content_id_Customer_Feedback\">Customer Feedback<\/h2>\n<p>Community feedback for the New Gradebook is welcome per\u00a0<a class=\"jive-link-wiki-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-11159-canvas-community-feedback-guidelines\">Canvas Community Feedback Guidelines<\/a>, which outlines general feedback, broken functionality, and feature enhancements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, all feedback for New Gradebook should be directed to\u00a0<a class=\"jivecontainerTT-hover-container jive-link-socialgroup-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/groups\/focus-group-gradebook\">New Gradebook Users Group<\/a>. This group contains existing information about the New Gradebook including frequently asked questions, product feedback commentary, community discussions, bug reports, and known issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Feature enhancements should include the gradebook_new tag.
