Every store has a buzzing back-to-school section, local traffic is picking up again, NOAA just issued a cautious Hurricane Season forecast, and courses have appeared on your Canvas dashboard labeled \u201cFall 2018.\u201d It\u2019s time to get your course shells set up and published so that your students can hit the ground running as soon as the semester starts.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of hitting the ground running, FAU\u2019s Canvas activity stream for the Fall 2018 semester is already bustling. Now that we\u2019re going into our second full year with Canvas, it\u2019s exciting to see our faculty and staff contributing so much time and effort toward their courses and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ve been with us for many years and you\u2019ve already populated your courses with materials from previous semesters. Or perhaps this is your first time teaching a class at FAU. Either way, we\u2019ve listed some quick tips and resources below to either get you started using Canvas or check your already built courses for some must-have details.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also updated and documented new tools and integrations added to Canvas. Visit Instructional Technologies\u2019 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fau.edu\/canvas\/additional_tools.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Additional Tools<\/a><\/strong> page and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.fau.edu\/canvas\/subscribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subscribe to the Instructional Technologies blog<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to receive the latest updates and view discounted pricing options for subscription-based integrations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fau.edu\/canvas\/getting-started.php#Instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Getting Started with Canvas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Canvas Course Must-Have Checklist<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Make it easy for your students to contact you<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Somewhere near the beginning of the Home Page of your course, display the preferred contact method that you would like your students to use to get hold of you.\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12777-415241442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Create or edit a page that you would like to use as a front page.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12784-415241445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declare a front page.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-13012-4152724499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Set your course\u2019s Home Page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.fau.edu\/canvas\/2018\/03\/12\/stay-up-to-date-managing-inbox-notifications-in-canvas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check that your inbox notifications are up to date.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upload your course syllabus<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.fau.edu\/canvas\/2017\/08\/15\/post-quick-tip-syllabus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Video Tutorial<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12831-415255577\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canvas document detailing all features of the \u201cSyllabus\u201d page in your Canvas course<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add Assignments<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Assignments can vary from empty placeholders to full exams. Canvas groups all quizzes, assignments, and graded discussions into the \u201cAssignments\u201d page of your course. And, if you assign due dates, they will populate your students\u2019 calendars as well as notify them when they are due. <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-9873-415267003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here\u2019s how!<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publish your course and its materials<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Your students will only see pages, assignments, quizzes, and modules that are published. Each of these items features a \u201cPublish\u201d button or icon that you can use to <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10101-4152180493\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toggle your course content\u2019s \u201cPublished\u201d state<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Your entire course needs to be published as well. Once you are ready to open your course to your students, <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-13030-415257126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click the \u201cPublish\u201d button at the top-right of your course\u2019s home page.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Instructional Technologies is always available to answer any questions you may have about Canvas and its integrations.
