Dr. Taylor Hagood is a Professor of American Literature at FAU, and has been a faculty member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for many years. Over the years, Dr. Hagood has acquired quite a following of students who greatly enjoy his classes. They have nicknamed him a “Modern Renaissance Man.” This past semester a student in Dr. Hagood’s course, “The Fireside Poets,” took it upon herself to write a poem about her favorite Osher LLI literature professor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

ODE TO THE RENAISSANCE MAN
\nBy Cookie Karp<\/em><\/p>\n

We don’t want to waste your time
\nBe patient if you can
\nAs we describe the attributes
\nOf the modern Renaissance man<\/p>\n

He must be well traveled
\nAnd seen places of intrigue
\nSpeak a multitude of languages
\nAnd join a writers league<\/p>\n

It takes a man with lots of charm
\nAnd ability to toil
\nWith pen and ink and paint brush
\nWith epee and with foil<\/p>\n

A special man who’ll acquiesce
\nWhen he gets the call
\nTo teach a bunch of seniors
\nWho think they know it all<\/p>\n

Yes, we think we know it all
\nSo-how can it be
\nThat a young southern charmer
\nKnows so much more than we<\/p>\n

Taylor’s the modern Renaissance man
\nHe writes, he paints, he sings
\nHe plays every instrument
\nWoodwind, brass and strings<\/p>\n

When he recites poetry
\nHe puts on a show
\nWe all become mesmerized
\nAs words like honey flow<\/p>\n

Sometimes he stops reciting
\nExcuse him if you please
\nHe has to say God bless you
\nWhen he hears a person sneeze<\/p>\n

Taylor helps us with our Shakespeare
\nA subject hard to grasp
\nNow I know my elbow
\nFrom Cleopatra’s asp<\/p>\n

Where do Renaissance men come from
\nDo they grow in Mississippi
\nIf Taylor came from Soho
\nWould he have been a Hippie<\/p>\n

He usually stays on subject
\nBut sometimes goes astray
\nHe talks about his family
\nIn such a loving way<\/p>\n

His Mom, his Dad, his Grandma
\nOlivia, his Sis
\nTaylor thinks his nephews
\nAre ready for Old Miss<\/p>\n

He dresses like a Southern beau
\nHe really is quite handsome
\nIf Taylor should be kidnapped
\nYou bet your life we’d pay the ransom<\/p>\n

Taylor, you reach perfection
\nIn all that you pursue
\nLeonardo da Vinci
\nCannot compare to you<\/p>\n

Here’s to Taylor Hagood
\nFrom each and every fan
\nWe are proud to be the students
\nOf the modern Renaissance man<\/p>\n
