American films are like the Supreme Court.\u00a0 They always support the beliefs of the moment.\u00a0 In the most obvious, and not so obvious, ways American films support the notion that women cannot sustain intelligent conversation with a man.\u00a0 In films men lecture.\u00a0 Women listen raptly or break down in tears.\u00a0 Faye Dunaway reversed that totally with William Holden in a famous film.<\/p>\n

In \u201cNetwork\u201d Faye Dunaway goes to William Holden\u2019s corporate office at night, and stands in the doorway.\u00a0 The trick is how long will it take Dunaway to get Holden out of his chair and standing next to her helpless.\u00a0 American feminism in film began with that scene.<\/p>\n

In \u201cFor Whom the Bell Tolls\u201d Ernest Hemingway defined the limits of love between a man and a woman.\u00a0 Of course, only from the man\u2019s perspective. All the selections in this lecture delve deeply and often acerbically with the topic theme.<\/p>\n

This lecture reviews the gamut of men talking down to women in film.<\/p>\n
