It’s Time To Migrate Your FAU Google Drive to Microsoft OneDrive

Posted on Posted in Tips and Tricks, Updates

As you’ve probably heard by now, Google has updated its service policies for all academic institutions. Effective November 18, 2022, your FAU Google Drive storage space will be limited to 5 gigabytes (GB). This quota impacts users who use their FAU email address with Google Apps, including Drive, Photos, and Gmail. For faculty, staff, and students, the remedy is to migrate content from Google Drive to your FAU Microsoft OneDrive account.

You’ll find that there are nearly identical functions across both systems, allowing you to use OneDrive in the same way that you were using Google Drive. If you are used to using Google Docs/Sheets/Slides/etc., Microsoft’s equivalent is called Office365 and is accessible through your FAU OneDrive account. With Office365, you’ll find it easy to create, edit and share Word/PowerPoint/Excel/etc. documents straight from your browser. Start checking this out by going to portal.office365.com and signing in with your FAU email address.

Your FAU OneDrive account also allows you to store up to 5 terabytes (TB) of files (i.e., 5120 GB or 16.5 million cat photos like the one in this article), giving you plenty of space to store lecture videos, projects and other FAU-specific content. It functions very much like a regular folder system on your computer with many of the sharing/editing functions you’re used to from Google. Please note that any documents that you shared from Google Drive will have to be re-shared once you migrate them to OneDrive.
