With the start of the semester underway, you may have already heard about or started to use Lockdown Browser in your courses. Lockdown Browser is a tool from Respondus that creates a secure testing environment for students, ensuring that they cannot access external applications from their testing computer during a test. The system also provides the option to enable Respondus Monitor if you need to record students’ webcams and screens while taking the exam.
Getting started with the software may be a bit tricky at first, but we’ve assembled a few guides and resources to assist with any speedbumps along the way. We also highly recommend reaching out to our team if this is the first time you’re setting this up in your courses.
For teachers, we’ve put together a setup guide that walks you through the setup process and describes the different options you can enable. On the student side, we have another guide that walks through the download/installation process and provides tips to avoid the usual technical issues that we see with the software. Links to both of these are below:
- For teachers: https://fau.edu/canvas/Files/lockdownBrowser_setup.pdf
- For students: https://fau.edu/canvas/Files/lockdownBrowser_student.pdf
Lastly, we also put together a course that students (and teachers) can use to run through the Lockdown Browser process whenever they want. Use the link below to enroll yourself and give Lockdown Browser a practice run:

If you experience issues with Lockdown Browser, it’s usually best to reach out to both our team as well as Respondus Support. Feel free to use the Lockdown Browser help request from our Help Desk to get in touch with our team. To reach Respondus Support, submit a ticket on their support site.
We also host online training sessions for Canvas and its integrations regularly via our TechEvents Calendar. Register for an upcoming webinar or book a personal appointment to meet one-on-one by using our team’s scheduler.
