Students – Learn to Host Online Meetings with Zoom and Webex

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

*Please note: FAU will retire use of Webex on June 30, 2023. The Webex platform will no longer be available for use in meetings after this date. Webex will be removed from Canvas on May 8, 2023, at the end of the Spring term. Users should download any important cloud recordings or meeting information before this date. Zoom and Microsoft Teams will still be available for meetings and office hours sessions.

For assistance with Zoom or Microsoft Teams, visit our TechEvents Calendar or schedule an appointment with one of our staff here.*

Times have changed and students now have access to convenient tools that can improve performance in class. One category of these tools is videoconferencing software. These apps are available for both desktop/laptop computers and mobile devices. You might already be familiar with Zoom and Webex, but the info below provides a refresher on the policies and features of both systems.decorative image

Zoom

Every FAU student has access to a basic license for Zoom. Below are some limitations and details regarding these accounts:

Cisco Webex

FAU Students also have access to Cisco Webex. These accounts have less limitations than the Zoom accounts, so they are better suited for scenarios where students need to meet in large groups or make cloud recordings. Sessions hosted through Webex have the capability of holding up to 1000 participants for an unlimited amount of time. Below are some links to get you started:

  • Sign in to the FAU Webex site here: https://fau.webex.com
  • Download the Cisco Webex app here: https://webex.com/download. To sign in to the app:
    • Use your FAU email address as the “work email address”
    • Afterwards, you’ll see a familiar FAU sign in site for Webex Admin. Enter your credentials and you’ll get signed in to the app.
  • After signing in to the FAU Webex site, you can:
    • Schedule meetings
    • View and start upcoming sessions
    • Start a Personal Room meeting. The Webex Personal Room is a meeting that acts like a virtual office that only you can open. The link to it never changes so that you can share it with peers for quick meetings. Furthermore, it uses your FAUnet ID so that it is unique to your account. For example:
      • https://fau.webex.com/meet/jsmith12345

For assistance with any of the above details or if you have further questions regarding videoconferencing options at FAU, feel free to submit a Help Desk request or schedule an appointment with one of our staff.
