Open Access With APC Discount

To assist faculty and staff with the Article Processing Charges (APC) associated with Open Access, Elsevier has extended a 15% discount on APC charges for Florida Atlantic authors and researchers who publish their articles in an Elsevier journal.

This is made possible through Florida Atlantic’s participation in the State University System Libraries’ ScienceDirect contract. When an author selects Open Access, the discounted price is presented automatically.

Authors are responsible for the remaining balance of the APC payment. The Elsevier APC discount has gone into effect this month (January 2024) and will remain in effect through December 2028.

FAU Restrictions on TikTok, WeChat and Other Applications

In accordance with a memo from the chancellor of the State University System (SUS) of Florida Board of Governors (BOG) regarding Emergency Regulation 3.0075, Florida Atlantic is taking immediate actions to protect the University from potential threats posed by certain applications or websites of concern. These applications are outlined in the BOG’s SUS Prohibited Technologies List.

The prohibited list includes TikTok, WeChat, Vkontakte (VK), Kaspersky, and QQ (Tencent QQ).

FAU is taking the following technical measures to restrict the use of these applications or websites:

  1. Blocking access to the applications from all FAU networks, including wireless and residential halls
  2. Blocking access to the applications from University-owned devices where possible
  3. Taking actions to prevent the installation of the applications on University-owned devices where possible
  4. Removing the applications from University-owned devices where possible

FAU employees are to discontinue the use of these applications or websites on University-owned devices including, but not limited to, laptops, desktops, cell phones and tablets, and uninstall any such applications from their devices. If an employee has one of these applications installed on a University-owned device and requires assistance with removal, please contact your department’s IT staff or call the FAU Help Desk (561-297-3999).

Personally-owned devices are not subject to these restrictions when they are used off-campus. However, access to the applications will be blocked while devices are in use on FAU campuses or when connected to the University’s VPN.

Upcoming Changes to DUO Authentication

To the FAU community,

FAU will be expanding DUO multi-factor authentication requirements to additional services beginning June 16, 2022.

There is no action required. However, services such as the FAU Helpdesk and Canvas will begin requiring DUO authentication as part of the log-in process for everyone that has not previously opted to use DUO with these platforms.

In addition, all users will be signed out of any Office 365 applications they are currently signed into and will be required to log in again. Applications include Outlook, Sharepoint, Teams, and Onedrive. While this should be a one-time occurrence, you may receive multiple prompts to log in if you are signed into multiple applications or mailboxes.

Due to these enhancements, FAU will no longer be forcing regular password resets based on the age of the password. FAU will continue to enforce password resets in instances when an account is compromised or is believed to be compromised.

If you experience any issues signing into DUO-enabled applications, please contact the Helpdesk at 561-297-3999.

This message was sent on behalf of the Office of Information Technology.
