Dear Fellow Owls,

As we continue to hear news about the evolution of COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus, I want to assure everyone that the health and safety of Florida Atlantic University students, faculty and staff is our top priority. We are monitoring the outbreak, and University officials are working with local, state and federal agencies to share the most updated information at fau.edu/coronavirus.

The best course of action is to remain informed and practice good infection control measures. FAU is increasing the number of hand hygiene stations around our campuses and increasing cleaning activities to help prevent the spread of germs. You can help protect yourself and those around you by avoiding close contact with people who are sick, staying home when you are sick, regularly washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or using hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol content, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

All students, faculty and staff who have traveled to impacted Level 3 countries (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea) within the past two weeks are to self-quarantine at home and avoid contact with others for 14 days. Additionally, members of the FAU community are strongly encouraged to consider deferring non-essential international travel in the coming months, including during spring break. The International Air Transport Association website is a valuable resource for travelers, including the risk levels of any country, which may change from day to day.

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), see your health care provider immediately. If you have been diagnosed or have symptoms consistent with coronavirus, wear a face mask when you are around other people and when you visit your healthcare provider. Students with health concerns should contact FAU Student Health Services at 561-297-3512. Faculty, staff and other members of the university community should contact their healthcare provider.

Although there are still a number of uncertainties surrounding the coronavirus situation, I hope everyone has a safe and pleasant Spring Break.

The Accounting Career and Internship Fair is occurring on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Recreation & Fitness Center on the Boca Raton campus. The Wilkes Honors College, sponsored by the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative, will host a screening of the film, “U-Turn” by film producer and director, Luis Argueta. The documentary tells the story of a group of Guatemalan immigrant women and children, who bravely spoke out about abuses they suffered at an agricultural plant. “U-Turn” is an educational, awareness and advocacy tool about the reality of migration, and the rights of migrants.
