OIT Systems Maintenance, Thursday, Jan. 24 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM

Office of Information Technology will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Thursday, 1/24/2013 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window. In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

When: 5:30 AM – 7:00 AM
Affected services: Banner Production, Banner Test, Blackboard Production, Blackboard Test, Appworx, Iplanet Mail, Oracle Management, ODS Production, ODS Test, NetApp Management Console
Affected systems: Bannerprd, Banoradev, Bbloracle, Bbloraclealt, Boc22ora01, Boc22ora02, Boc22ora03,
Mcoracle, Modena, Odsprod, Odstest, Oem, Naadmcon
Description of maintenance: Add in new SAS storage to existing stack on bocana01 (NetApp FAS3240 filer)
User impact: We do not expect any end-user impact, but above are systems/applications that could be
affected should something go wrong.

When: 3:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Affected services: Finance 8.8, Finance Self Service 8.6, FacAdv Self Service 8.5.2/8.5.3
Affected systems: Banner
Description of maintenance: The above mentioned Banner modules will be upgraded to the specified version in production FAUP (INB & SSB).
User impact: The user may receive a timeout or ‘Page Not Found’ message while connected to Finance SSB or FacADV SSB.

Exchange and Firewall Modifications

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve performance of MS Exchange, on Sunday, January 20 between 3:00 am and 6:00 am additional system will be added to the Exchange cluster. Users will experience intermittent connectivity issues during this period.

On Monday, Jan 21 from 3:00 am to 6:00 am, FAU core firewall will be receiving patch upgrade. This may cause intermittent network outage.

Office of Information Technology (OIT) will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Thursday, 01/17/2013 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window. In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

OwlApps, EMS, Blackboard, Banner SSB & INB,  and SCCM

When: 3:00 AM – 4:00 AM
Affected services: OwlApps, Graduate Admissions App
Affected systems: OwlApps
Description of maintenance: We are updating OwlApp to correct a bug in the confirmation email.
User impact: The Admissions application will not be available during the proposed downtime. We do expect it to take less than the allotted time.

When: 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM
Affected Services: EMS
Affected Systems: events.fau.edu
Description of Maintenance: EMS, VirtualEMS, and Master Calendar will be patched and upgraded to their latest versions.
User Impact: Users sessions will be interrupted and they will need to log in again.

When: 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM

Affected systems: Blackboard
Description of maintenance: Install two patches in Blackboard to solve issues with submitting grades in certain situations.
User impact: Blackboard will not be available during the proposed downtime. We do expect it to take less than the allotted time.

When: 3:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Affected services: Banner SSB
Affected systems: Banner FAUP
Description of maintenance: The following updates will be installed in Banner production:

  • Student 8.5.4 upgrade + patches
  • Student Self Service 8.5.3 upgrade + patches
  • General 8.5.2 upgrade
  • Web General 8.5.2 upgrade
  • Web Tailor 8.5.2 upgrade

User impact: The user may receive a timeout or ‘Page Not Found’ message while connected to SSB. Banner INB or Banner SSB response time may be a little slower than normal. Users can try to connect after 7:00 AM

When: 3:00 AM – 5:00 AM
Affected Services: SCCM
Affected Systems: SCCM
Description of Maintenance: Microsoft prematurely released a patch into production which only is compatible with SCCM SP1.  The patch upgraded a component on the server to only be compatible after SP1.  After the patch was installed, the SCCM server is currently down and not responding to client’s requests.  The only resolution to this issue is to upgrade the SCCM software version to SP1.  Service Pack 1 will also provide new features to SCCM administrators as well as support for Windows 8, Server 2012, Mac OS, and Linux.
User Impact: None.  Desktop clients will continue to not be able to talk with the server. When the service pack gets installed the clients will begin talking with the server again.

Exchange Issue Resolved

Several users have reported connectivity issue to Microsoft Exchange mail and calendar. We have identified and resolved the issue which was related to an active mail server at FAU remote site. Parature (Online Ticketing System) Maintenance, Fri, Jan 11 at 11:00 PM

On Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 PM EST, Parature will be performing an upgrade to their caching service. They leverage this service to cache all active user sessions.  There will be two noticeable side effects of this maintenance:

  • All users will be automatically logged out of the Service Desk and Portal. We expect this only to occur once and you will be able to log back in immediately.
  • There will be an outage to Parature Chat, which is estimated to last 10 minutes.

In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

Affected services: Library & BOC22CMSCCM01

Description of maintenance: Add firewall entries on BOC22CMSCCM01 to block access to the 136 subnet (131.91.136.1 – 131.91.139.255). This will help prevent Library systems from communicating with the OIT run SCCM server.
User impact: None expected

When: 5:00am – 7:00am
Affected Services: IDM production, Luminis production, Banner production, Blackboard production, Phonebill app, Report Caster production, OwlApps, Network registration (netreg), CMS (OmniUpdate)
Affected Systems: boc22ora03, mcoracle, bannerprd, bbloracle.
Description of Maintenance: Oracle database patch set updates and host patch installations
User Impact: Affected services will be unavailable during the maintenance window.

When: 5:00am – 7:00am
Affected services: FAU Homepage (www.fau.edu)
Description of maintenance: The servers that are responsible for www.fau.edu are being upgraded.
User impact: Web users should not notice any major impact as the Global Traffic Manager will direct traffic to allow a smooth transition. However, there may be isolated pages that may become nonfunctional and will require extra debugging due to architectural changes of upgrading to the new system

Affected Systems: ds.fau.edu
Description of Maintenance: Install renewed signed SSL Certificates on ldapboc0 and ldapboc1.
User Impact: Minimal user impact, SSO, Blackboard and other ldap services may display errors while the ldap service is restarted, we are renewing our certificates with ones signed by Digicert.

When: 5:30am – 5:45am
Affected systems: dnsboc0.fau.edu
Description of maintenance: Middleware will replace the DNS server dnsboc0.fau.edu running Enterprise Linux 5 with a new server running Enterprise Linux 6.3. The new server will also run on separate physical hardware from all other DNS servers providing improve reliability to the DNS infrastructure.
User impact: For a few minutes users will receive only from dnsjup1.fau.edu or dnsboc1.fau.edu, but no downtime is expected.

Network problems at the Boca campus are still persisting. Some phones and some buildings are affected.

RESOLVED – Owl Apps password page in MyFAU is inaccessible

Description of maintenance: The Sympa mail server and  Frevvo web servers will be down from 4:00am until the DNS refresh occurs at approximately 6:15am.  Users will not be able to send any messages via the list servers and the OwlApp Graduate Admissions application will be inaccessible.
User impact: Users will not be able to access lists.fau.edu and GradApp during this time.

When: 5:00 – 6:00 AM
Affected Services: EMS
Affected Systems: events.fau.edu
Description of Maintenance:  VirtualEMS, EMS Web Client, and Master Calendar will be patched and upgraded to their latest versions.
The apps have been installed and tested on fauweb5. Once the DNS change has gone into effect users will be directed to the updated versions of the apps
User Impact:  Users sessions will be interrupted and they will need to login again.

RESOLVED – Issues with accessing OwlMail (Gmail)

Google/Gmail is currently experiencing connectivity issues. At this time you may not be able to access OwlMail.  This is a widespread issue and affecting all Gmail users.
