OIT service interruption

OIT has experienced a problem in its data center which are affecting multiple services, some of which are:

– DNS
– Blackboard
– Sharepoint
– Internal websites

OIT Systems Maintenance, Thurs. Nov 21 from 3:00 – 7:00 AM

Office of Information Technology will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Thursday, 11/21/2013 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window.  In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

When: 6:00 – 7:00AM
Affected services: smtp.fau.edu
Affected systems: smtp.fau.edu
Description of maintenance: We are restructuring and consolidating mail servers to simply the email flow architecture and to enforce spam and virus scanning.
User impact: End-users in this change will refer more to users running various mail servers or services on campus: 1. Possible rate limiting until we add server to exception list. 2. Email originating from exception list servers (e.g. blackboard, ibiweb) will not be virus or spam scanned. 3. Possible firewall blocks until security adds new rules for server.

When: 5:00 – 6:00AM
Affected services: swise.fau.edu
Affected systems: swise.fau.edu
Description of maintenance: We are freeing the swise.fau.edu server from its restrictive, physical shell to allow it to become a virtual entity.
User impact: https URLs and apps served by swise.fau.edu will be unavailable.  These include: Clearwire, Electronic Thesis, Scholarship Management System, Strategies & Tips for Academic Recovery, Writing Across Curriculum, and True Blue.

When: 5:00 – 7:00AM
Affected Services: ODS production environment. Webfocus won’t be able to connect to the ODS database.
Affected Systems: odsprod
User Impact:  Affected services will be unavailable during the maintenance window.
Reason: Oracle database ODSP needs to be patched for ODS 8.4.1

When: 3:00 – 7:00AM
Affected services: Banner FAUP: Accounts Receivable upgrade 8.4.4, Accounts Receivable upgrade 8.4.5, Student Self Service 8.5.4.3 & 8.5.4.4 patches
Affected systems: Banner FAUP
Description of maintenance: The following updates will be installed in Banner production: Accounts Receivable upgrade 8.4.4, Accounts Receivable upgrade 8.4.5, Student Self Service 8.5.4.3 & 8.5.4.4 patches
User impact: FAUP may be unavailable during this time

When: 3:00 – 6:00AM
Affected Services: Banner production, Blackboard production
Affected Systems: bannerprd, bannerprddr, bbloracle, bbloracledr.
User Impact:  Affected services will be unavailable during the maintenance window.
Reason: Oracle database patch set updates and host patch installations

When: 4:00AM – 6:00AM
Affected services: secure.fau.edu, secure2.fau.edu, ulrweb.fau.edu, fauftp1
Affected systems: FAUWeb1, FAUWeb6
Description of maintenance: OIT will be migrating the secure.fau.edu, secure2.fau.edu, and ulrweb.fau.edu websites to a new server. Additionally, fauftp1 will move as well.
User impact: Secure.fau.edu, secure2.fau.edu, ulrweb.fau.edu and fauftp1.fau.edu will be intermittently inaccessible during the window. These sites also affect secure andi, student and home pages; plus the mealplans, oig, orientation, dotnetdev, and changeGappsPassword sites.

When: 4:00 – 6:00AM
Affected services: Talisma
Affected systems: Talisma
Description of maintenance: We will be applying the newest hot fix to talisma per the request of admissions. Talisma will be unavailable from 4-6 am. This new patch also requires the talisma client to be patched.  Admissions will contact their users to let them know about the downtime and the client change.
User impact: Talisma will be unavailable from 4-6 am.

[RESOLVED] Problems with FAU Self-Service Menus

November 14, 2013
12:45am:  The problem with the FAU Self-Service Menus has been determined to be caused by the software that delivered its look and feel. We have returned the Self-Service system to its more simplistic generic design to continue the registration process and bypass the problem system as we continue to investigate. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

 

November 13, 2013
11:24pm: The FAU Self-Service menus are taking long to load and in some cases not loading. We are working on the problem and will post an update as soon as we have more information.

ODS

The ODS production upgrade has been changed to next Thursday, 11/21/2013.  ODS production will be unavailable that day from 12:01pm to 12:15pm in order to redirect WebFOCUS to point to a temporary ODS environment.  ODS production will then be upgraded to a new release (version 8.4.1).  The data in the temporary ODS environment will be current up to and including Wednesday, 11/20/2013.  The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by 8:00am on 11/25/2013.  At that time, WebFOCUS will be redirected to point once again to the ODS production environment.

Description of maintenance: The following updates will be installed in Banner productionEmployee Self Service 8.9.0 upgrade, Position Control 8.9.0.1 patch, HR/Payroll 8.9.0.4, 8.9.0.5, 8.9.0.6 patches, HR/Payroll 8.9.0.7, 8.9.0.8 patches, Employee Self Service 8.9.0.1, 8.9.0.2, 8.9.0.3 patches, Employee Self Service phpecex-ear-fix patch, WorkFlow 8.1.0.4.jar, 8.1.0.5.jar patches
User impact: FAUP may have to be down – Self Service related changes sometimes require shutting the system down during installation

Affected services: Blackboard
Description: Blackboard has released updates to several Building Blocks including Blackboard Mobile, Software Updates, Cloud Profiles, and Social Profiles.
User Impact: The features listed above will be temporarily unavailable

When: 4:00 – 5:00 AM
Affected services: Network Drives (Andi.fau.edu, student.fau.edu, and home.fau.edu)
Affected systems: Andi.fau.edu, student.fau.edu, and home.fau.edu
Description of maintenance: OIT will be migrating the andi.fau.edu, student.fau.edu and home.fau.edu websites to a new server. Migrate the ANDI, Student and Home websites from IIS7 on FAUWeb1 to IIS8 on FAUWeb6. DNS records will be updated to reflect the new locations.
User impact: Andi.fau.edu, student.fau.edu, and home.fau.edu will be intermittently inaccessible during the window.

Office of Information Technology will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Thursday, 10/31/2013 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window. In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

Description of maintenance: Systems will be doing rolling restarts blackboard services to try to remedy a bug within blackboard.
User impact: Blackboard will be unavailable during the maintenance window.

Affected systems: ANDI (fauandi1/fauandi2)
Description of maintenance: OIT will be physically moving the primary University fileserver (fauandi1\fauandi2). The system will be unavailable for approximately 15 minutes.
User impact: The ANDI server will be unavailable for approximately 15 minutes

Description of maintenance: OIT will be rebooting some of the systems which support staff and faculty mail. We do not expect any interruption of service.
User impact: No end-user impact is expected

Description of maintenance: The following updates will be installed in Banner production: General 8.6.1 upgrade, Position Control 8.9.0 upgrade, HR/Payroll 8.9.0 upgrade, HR/Payroll 8.9.0.1, 8.9.0.2, 8.9.0.3 patches, Tax Updates #184, #185, #186

We are currently experiencing intermittent performance issues affecting Blackboard, Banner, and logins (single-sign on).
