OIT Systems Maintenance, Thursday, March 7, from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM

Office of Information Technology will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Thursday, 03/07/2013 from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window. In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

Blackboard, Banner INB & SSB, Exchange IMAP & POP, Xpresssion/Voicemail,  Single-Sign On (SSO.fau.edu)

When: Thursday, March 7th and Friday, March 8th 
Affected Systems: phone service in building 36
Affected Services: phone service in building 36
Description of Maintenance: The telecommunications cable that provides phone service to Building 36 was damaged during the recent hot water pipe break in the tunnel. Jade Communications will be replacing the splice kit and repairing the cable.
User Impact: There will be intermittent outages of phone service throughout building 36 during the days outlined

Description of Maintenance: The following updates will be installed in Banner production: Student 8.5.5 upgrade, Student Self-Service 8.5.4 upgrade, Student 8.5.6 upgrade, Student Self-Service 8.5.4.1 upgrade, Faculty and Advisor Self-Service 8.5.4.1 upgrade, Self-Service Banner New Look and Feel
User Impact: Banner Self-Service – the user will not be able to log in. Banner Student INB – response time may be a little slower than normal.  Loss of connection may occur.

Description of Maintenance:  The systems group will be migrating these virtual machines from HVCLUSTER to boc22hvclust01.

Description of Maintenance: We would like to update the firmware to the HP Blade Chassis to prepare for the migration of the hosts from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012
User Impact: The following services will be offline for small periods of time during the window:
Blackboard, Ibiweb, Ieaweb, Web proxy (octopus)

When: 4:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Affected Services: Myfau, Banner Forms, Blackboard, Sharepoint, LDAP(ds.fau.edu), CAS, IDM, Talon, owlapp, TMS (tandberg), Test Myfau, Boca www.fau.edu.   www.fau.edu itself should not be interrupted as it will failover to NWRDC during the periods of downtime.
Affected Systems: BigIP
Description of Maintenance: Upgrade BigIP system version from BIG-IP 10.2.0 Build 1789.0 to BIG-IP 10.2.4 Build 732.0. 
User Impact: Intermittent downtime and erratic service behavior at failover points during the upgrade process. Services hosted by BigIP load balancers will be interrupted.  These include and are not limited to: Myfau, Banner Forms, Blackboard, Sharepoint, LDAP(ds.fau.edu), CAS, IDM, Talon, owlapp, TMS (tandberg), Test Myfau, Boca www.fau.edu.   www.fau.edu itself should not be interrupted as it will failover to NWRDC during the periods of downtime.

When: 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM

Description of Maintenance: Middleware will be making a config change and pushing it to all blackboard app servers.  We are doing this config change to provide better fault tolerance in case we have to take application servers out of rotation.  Blackboard will be unavailable from 5:00-6:00 AM, we will roll back the config change in case the fix does not work.
User Impact: Blackboard will be unavailable between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM

Description of Maintenance: Middleware will be applying two patches to the blackboard servers to fix small outstanding issues.

Description of Maintenance: A package for mssql will be added to the main webservers that are responsible for www.fau.edu.  This is to allow webpages that rely on an mssql backend to run properly.  Servers will be updated one at a time to ensure that there are no interruptions in service.
User Impact: No anticipated downtime

Description of Maintenance: CI will be working with our vendor Siemens to install service patches on the Xpressions servers
User Impact: The Xpressions/Voicemail servers will be offline during the window

Description of Maintenance: CI will be working with our vendor Siemens to install Service patches on the OSV servers
User Impact: No anticipated downtime

Affected Services: Single-Sign on (SSO.fau.edu)

Description of Maintenance: SSO.fau.edu will be updated to support Banner single sign on and Service Logout Redirection.
User Impact: There will be a period of 5 to 10 minutes where users will not be able to log in to services supported by SSO.fau.edu

Description of Maintenance: Connect the ACP cables (secondary path) for the new SAS storage that was added to bocana01 (NetApp FAS3240 filer) on January 24th.  After connecting these cables, we may need to quickly disconnect one end of the SAS cables that we added to get them coiled properly in the rack.
User Impact: No anticipated downtime

Recent changes to VPN and email access

Due to the latest number of phishing attacks from compromised accounts, we have blocked access to the internal SMTP server (smtp.fau.edu) from remote systems that connect via VPN until further notice. VPN users should continue to use Outlook Web Access, Outlook or MyFAU from remote systems. For those using non-Outlook email clients but still connect to Exchange, please refer to the information located here for detailed settings regarding IMAP, POP and authenticated SMTP.

Exchange/Talisma issues

We are currently experiencing a connectivity issue with multiple systems in a specific rack. Affected by these issues are:

exchangemb0[2-3], taldb01, hvboc0[1-5]

Additionally, exchangemb01 is unable to contact it’s disks

Exchange services are up and running at NWRDC

VM guests on hvboc0[1-5] appear to be up, but host management is unavailable

Talisma may be unavailable

We are working to identify and resolve these issues as soon as possible

Banner production (FAUP) maintenance including Banner XE installations, the Database Extension Utility, module updates and patches is scheduled for this Thursday (2/7/2013) morning from 3:00am to 7:00am. Parature (Online Ticketing System) Maintenance, Fri, Jan 11 at 11:00 PM

On Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 PM EST, Parature will be performing an upgrade to their caching service. They leverage this service to cache all active user sessions.  There will be two noticeable side effects of this maintenance:

  • All users will be automatically logged out of the Service Desk and Portal. We expect this only to occur once and you will be able to log back in immediately.
  • There will be an outage to Parature Chat, which is estimated to last 10 minutes.
