Microsoft Services Disruption

Microsoft is currently experiencing issues with multiple services including some office applications and online portals. We do not currently have an ETA for service restoration but will post updates when the issues are resolved.

[Resolved] Errors Accessing Microsoft Services

2025/10/01 @ 10:00 am – We determined this was caused by a security policy affecting a very limited number of users. The policy has been adjusted to prevent the issue.

2025/10/01 @9:45 am – As of this morning, a limited number of users are experiencing issues logging into some Microsoft Services. We are investigating the problem and request that anyone who receives a “You can’t get there from here” message contact the Help Desk.

Issue signing into Office Apps on Windows Computers

We have identified an issue with Duo Authentication when signing into Office Apps on Windows computers. After Duo, the application just hangs and you are unable to activate Office. We are currently investigating.

Microsoft Entra MFA / Microsoft Authenticator replacing Duo

Starting Today, September 16th, Florida Atlantic University will begin transitioning Employees from DUO to Microsoft Entra MFA for secure login to Microsoft applications.

What’s Happening:

  • Employees will begin seeing a 4P prompt to setup the Microsoft Authenticator when signing into FAU Services.
  • After enrolling, Entra MFA will be activated for all Microsoft apps (Outlook, Teams, Office 365, etc.). Duo will remain for non-Microsoft logins until we fully transition in the next few months.

What You Need to Know:

  • You can choose from:
    • Microsoft Authenticator app (recommended)
    • Hardware token (e.g., YubiKey)
    • SMS text message
    • Additional options coming soon

OIT Systems Maintenance

Office of Information Technology will be performing routine systems maintenance which includes but is not limited to rebooting Windows servers as deemed necessary, installing critical patches and other health checks on Wed, 7/9/2025 and Thur 7/10/2025 from 12:00 AM to 7:00 AM during OIT maintenance window. In addition, the following systems will be specifically impacted:

Server Maintenance

  • Description: OIT will be performing server maintenance on 7/10 at 04:00am-05:00am affecting sso.fau.edu.
  • Start Time for Change: Thu 7/10/25 4:00 AM
  • End Time of Change: Thu 7/10/25 5:00 AM
  • Impacted Services: Following services may be affected:
    sso.fau.edu
  • End user impact: Should have no end user impact.

Disable Otter.AI in Microsoft Tenant

  • Description: OIT will be disabling access to Otter.AI from the FAU Microsoft 365 environment on July 9th, 2025.
  • Start Time for Change: Wed 7/9/25 7:00 AM
  • End Time of Change: Wed 7/9/25 7:00 AM
  • Impacted Services: N/A – no university-provided services are affected
  • End user impact: Users that had been using Otter.AI to take notes in teams meetings will need to utilize a different product or utilize the built-in features in teams.

Network Maintenance – All Campuses Saturday July 12th from 12:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m.

  • Description: OIT will be performing network maintenance affecting all campuses from 12:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m. on Saturday July 12th. During this time, all FAU campuses will experience short outages impacting connectivity to services and the internet.
  • Start Time for Change: Sat 7/12/25 12:00 AM
  • End Time of Change: Sat 7/12/25 3:00 AM
  • Impacted Services: All services will be impacted briefly. Some services that do not handle network disruptions may need to be restarted such as Appworx.
  • End user impact: All campuses will experience brief outages during the maintenance window affecting connectivity to all services.

Banner Maintenance

  • Description: OIT will be performing maintenance on Banner from 12:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. on Thur. 10 July. Banner will not be available during this time.

  • Impacted Services: Banner Admin, Self-Service, Registration
  • End user impact: All end users of Banner.

    • Description: We are upgrading our incoming email servers.
    • Start Time: 7/2/2025 0:00

    • Impacted Services: Incoming email, outgoing email
    • End User Impact: Incoming email flow may be affected as 365 mail servers use different spam detection technology than fortimails. Outgoing email flow may be affected as new SMTP server will use different mail delivery technology than fortimails.
  2. Research Computing AI – OwlChat WebUI
    • Description: The Research Computing AI – OwlChat WebUI service will be offline from 5 am to 7 am on June 26, 2025 for scheduled maintenance. This will prevent researchers, students, and employees from utilizing custom large language models based on the OwlChat WebUI service ([https://chat.hpc.fau.edu](https://chat.hpc.fau.edu)).
    • Start Time: 7/3/2025 5:00
    • End Time: 7/3/2025 7:00

  3. Jupiter Campus System Migrations
    • Description: Systems will be migrating several resources from older hardware to newer hardware. Some network services may be temporarily impacted by this migration during the change window.

    • End Time: 7/3/2025 6:00
    • Impacted Services: DNS and DHCP
    • End User Impact: All on-campus members of the Jupiter community will experience brief DNS and DHCP outages during the migrations.
  4. Banner Maintenance
    • Description: OIT will be performing maintenance on Banner from 12:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. on Thur. 3 Jul. Banner will not be available during this time.
    • Start Time: 7/3/2025 0:00
    • End Time: 7/3/2025 7:00
    • Impacted Services: Banner Admin, Self-Service, Registration, Access Management, ODS
    • End User Impact: All end users of Banner.
  5. PaperCut Database Migration
    • Description: This change involves migrating the database for the Papercut service to a new SQL Server environment to improve reliability, performance, and align with current infrastructure.
    • Start Time: 7/2/2025 9:00
    • End Time: 7/2/2025 10:00
    • Impacted Services: Papercut
    • End User Impact: A brief interruption to printing services may occur during the database migration.
  6. Banner Server Maintenance
    • Description: We are decommissioning several production Banner servers that are no longer in use. The virtual servers will first be shut down and later deleted. There will be no impact to user services for these decommissioned servers.

UPDATE: Single-Sign On Test Unavailable

At this time Single Sign-on Test (SSOT) is functioning and users should be able to sign-in to TEST systems. We are currently monitoring the situation and will update if it changes.

Some users may be unable to access Outlook on the web

Microsoft has reported they are currently investigating an issue with Exchange Online. Users may encounter a “Something went wrong” error when accessing Outlook on the web, or the New Outlook app. We are monitoring the Microsoft status and will update as soon as there is more information.

Duo SMS/Telephony Authentication unavailable

Our two factor authentication Duo is currently experiencing an issue causing SMS and Phone Call delivery failures. The vendor is currently investigating and a status is available at https://status.duo.com/
